Norrköpings Tidningar and Inger Dahlman : „Reading The Book of Whispers You’ll be bewitched”

A tale of revenge and reconciliation

Mr Varujan Vosganian’s Book of Whispers reminds us that not only Jews suffered deportation,  assault and destruction in  modern times, but  also that the Armenian  people were  similary decimated, until only one  debris remained.
In a mixture of documentary  and novel writing,  Vosganian has drawn the picture of a genocide whose pressure waves  also affected his  childhood. He does so in a very detailed and colorful manner,  sometimes violently, sometimes  with gentle understanding  for what moves the human heart.
Vosganian writes about atrocities  against one and a half million  people and makes  the fragrance rich and teeming.  A small Romanian town  where his Armenian family  ended up fleeing persecution  is the center of the action. It shows his grandfather, who is one of the town’s  collecting  figures, and young Vosganian sitting under the table and listening to  the old men’s whispered conversation,  in the belief that the boy might  be the one to write the story one day. Grandfather Garabet’s belief was that  poets, and not generals are the ones who shape the world.   Coming from a Persian princely family and even if as a little boy he saw horror, this did not cloud the author’s gentle humanity.
Mr Varujan Vosganian’s story of violence, revenge and reconciliation is based around these two figures. The deportations made them the European Jews, being subject to  deportations to concentration camps, with death as the  ultimate goal. It all was a hell for children, who strayed  from place  the place until just bones remained, left for the dessert’s hungry birds.
The world’s first terrorist attack was staged in August 1896, by Armenians , at the Bank of Constantinople, in order to turn  the world’s eyes to the  genocide that went against  them. Also in the Book of Whispers we find the history of  General  Dro, a romantic madman  who aligned himself with Hitler  in the belief that with an  Armenian legion he would  able to stop communism.
In the dark of night, grandfather Garabet would counsel with others in the cemetery; there they kept a forbbiden radio and such was the night when news of president Kennedy’s assassination   reached the village. The tranquil and ironic humor describing that episode is present  throughout the book.
Born in 1958, Mr Varujan Vosganian has held several ministerial posts  in Romania.  He is a politician, economist  and mathematician and has  written poetry and short stories  in addition to his duties as a  university teacher. His  Book of Whispers is a herculean work, for him and for the reader as well. And, given the novel’s fragrant, horrendous, hopeful feeling in a world of violence, you become  bewitched.

med mild förståelse

för vad som rör sig i människohjärtan.

Vosganian skriver om illdåd

mot en och en halv miljoner

människor och gör

det doftrikt och myllrande.

En liten rumänsk by

där hans armeniska släkt

hamnat på flykt undan förföljelsen

är händelsernas

centrum. Där låter hans

farfar, som är byns samlande

gestalt, honom sitta under

bordet och lyssna till

de gamlas viskande samtal

i tron att pojken kanske

blir den som kommer att

nedteckna historien. Farfaderns

övertygelse är att

poeterna och inte generalerna

formar världen.

Morfadern, som också

finns i byn, kommer av

furstesläkt. Redan som

liten pojke såg han fasan

i vitögat men det har inte

grumlat hansblidamänniskosyn.

Omkring dessa två gestalter

bygger Varujan Vosganian

upp berättelsen om

våld, hämnd och försoning.

Grymheterna är de samma

som de som vederfors

Europas judar: Deporteringarna

med döden som

slutmål. Koncentrationslägren.

Sammanbundna

kroppar, dumpade i vattendrag.

Barnens helvete,

där de skyfflas från plats

till plats tills bara skelett

återstår, som lämnas åt öknens

asfåglar.

Världens första terrordåd

iscensattes av armenier

mot Osmanska

banken i Konstantinopel

i augusti 1896 för att rikta

världens ögon mot det

folkmord som pågick mot

dem. Det finns med i Viskningarnas

bok lika väl som

berättelsen om denurhistorien

utraderade general

Dro, en romantisk galning

som lierade sig med Hitler

i tron att han med en enda

armenisk legion skulle

kunna hejda kommunismen.

Mörka nätter rådslår farfar

med andra i en gravkammare,

där kistan rymmer

en förbjuden radio. En sådan

natt är det när beskedet

om mordet på Kennedy

nått byn via ett nyhetssvep

som visas på bio före Helan

och Halvan. Den stillsamt

ironiska humor som episoden

beskrivs med finns

överallt i boken.

Varujan Vosganian, född

1958, har haft flera ministerposter

i Rumänien.

Han är politiker, ekonom

och matematiker och har

skrivit poesi och noveller

vid sidan om sin tjänst som

universitetslärare. Hans

Viskningarnas bok är ett

kraftprov också för läsaren.

Men ger man sig hans

doftande, hemska, hoppfulla

värld i våld, blir man

bergtagen.
